marsh hen hunt

Well hello friends! I hope everyone is having a good weeks of far… I think I am still recovering from the weekend – bachelorette party for my future sister in law might have done me in! Needless to say, no hunting was done last weekend, but I was able to get a hunt in while duck season was on its little break last week. And, I have to tell you, marsh hen hunting is oh-so-fun. Once you get past the whole standing on the front of a (however slowly) moving boat while holding a loaded gun and trying to see those squirrelly marsh hens despite having the balance of a one-legged dog, you’re ally get the hang of things and it’s all fun from there! With a limit of 15 marsh hens per person, I knew we were in for a fun morning regardless of weather or lack of experience.

My dad has been marsh hen hunting a number of times before, and always comes away smiling. If you don’t know much about the subject, the season is from September 18-22 and October 5–Dec. 8, and really requires a super high tide. As in, a flood tide plus a previous day or two of rain, plus wind from the east equals an ideal tide. Why, you ask? Marsh hens – these guys, if you aren’t sure what they are – love to hide up in the marsh grass, and don’t like to fly if they don’t have to. When they do, though? You’re in for some really fun shooting.

We got out to the area we were hunting around 7:45 am, and it was nonstop movement until around 10:45 (high tide was about 9 am that morning). After I got the hang of standing/shooting on the front of the boat, I mounted my GoPro on the shotgun, and ended up getting some really great shots (plus video!). Enjoy!
